Sportsmanship!!

By: Jose Nova “Robert” & Vincent “Papi” Gallegos

Sportsmanship is the trait that one needs in order to be successful. You have to have courtesy towards others whether they are your opponents or your own teammates. If someone falls and gets hurt, pick them up, help them up whether it is your teammate or your opponent.  Sportsmanship means a lot because without it, there would be chaos or unfairness in the sport. In the dictionary, Sportsmanship is defined as, “the behavior exhibited in playing sports, either good or bad; the good attitude/behavior displayed by players of a game; fairness, determination winning or losing gracefully.” Sportsmanship does not necessarily mean to have courtesy towards others but also to yourself. Respect yourself and respect others. Treat them how you would want to be treated, so they can treat you how you treat them. For example, after every game, all players line-up and shake hands to let each other know that they had a great game against their opponent and that they look forward to playing them again sometime soon. Another example would be something like, if you strike out, don’t go all throwing a tantrum, relax and stay positive, maybe next time you’ll get that hit you want. If people see you all angry and mad, it makes not only you look bad, but also your team and your teammates. People will think that your team are sore losers.

When you have a trait like sportsmanship, its as if you have the power to do anything. It’s your choice to help others. But if you decide not to help someone for any reason, think of it this way, they won’t help you later in the future or when you need that help, simply because you didn’t help them when they needed your help.

Choose The Right and help your teammates and opponents. It is good for both you and them and your teammate.
